The fishing is great! Redfish (locally called spottail bass) like

recently named a Top 20 Fishing Town by Field and Stream
magazine. In addition, catching your own shrimp and blue
crabs or gathering oysters and clams can keep one well
supplied with a variety of seafood.
Frogmore Stew is a local favorite. It's a simple meal of freshly
caught shrimp, smoked sausage, fresh corn on the cob, and
sometimes new potatoes, all boiled together in seasoned water and
served with spicy cocktail sauce. It works equally well as the
family dinner or a party meal for 200 of your closest friends.
Downtown Beaufort is on a peninsula of Port
Royal Island surrounded on three sides by the
Beaufort River, which is also the Intracoastal
Waterway. In the plantation era, Beaufort was an
active seaport for the shipment of indigo and sea
island cotton grown on the nearby plantations.
Today, other than shrimp boats headed to or from
sea or an occasional barge or tour boat on the
Intracoastal, the miles and miles of pristine water
are used just for pleasure.
The entire downtown area of Beaufort, SC is designated a
Historic District by the Trust for Historic Preservation. Of the
more than 50 historic structures that have been identified, many
are still in use as private homes.
Given the mild winters, golf in Beaufort,SC is one of the many
amenities that can be enjoyed year round. With eight terrific
courses in the immediate area, ranging from totally private to
totally public, golfers can easily find the perfect course to suit
their game and their lifestyle.
Exploring the hundreds of square miles of pristine salt
water marshes is a great way to get away from it all. In
some areas and at some tides, one can go for hours without
seeing anything but birds, fish, shrimp, crabs and dolphins.
Sixteen miles east of town, 5000 acre Hunting Island State Park
affords Beaufort's residents a beautiful maritime forest and three
miles of unspoiled sandy beach without a single condo on the
whole island. Visitors may also enjoy nature trails, a boat landing,
a fishing pier and the historic light house.

Just as in most towns, the department stores have moved
to the outskirts, but there are still plenty of shopping
opportunities in downtown Beaufort.
Even if you don't have a friend or relative participating in
a Parris Island graduation, you owe it to yourself to
attend at least once. You'll be glad you did.
And the beauty of the marsh and water is never very far away.
